"Little Handmade Works of Art"

Hi, I'm Alex, the artist and printmaker behind MegaLilyDesign. Welcome to my little world of Linocut Printmaking.

I work solo from my tiny studio in East Sussex. Inspired mainly by the natural world I produce original Linocut Prints, all hand pulled without a press. Most of my prints are created with single block and colour, using the carving itself to express the image.

I also create some prints using the reduction method of printmaking. These prints are multilayered but still created from a single block, the block is destroyed in the process so these prints are very small editions and can never be recreated.

Linocut Printing now forms the basis of my practice, however,  I do paint a small number of watercolour and acrylic paintings.

Thanks for visiting my website!

Linocut printing is a process that you may be familiar with - lots of people will have tried it at school.

Like any process it evolves over time and with practice can be used to create a wide range of images from the simplistic single colour prints to complex reduction prints, and everything between.

Each print begins with a drawing and sometimes a painting to plan colours, the image is then transferred to the Lino in reverse. At that point carving can begin using a range of U and V shaped tools. To create the print, ink is rolled onto the surface of the Lino block and the paper laid face down on top. The back of the paper is then hand burnished to lift the print.

Below are a few of my linocut prints in a Gallery.

More detailed information on sizes, prices and shipping can be found on my Folksy Shop via either the Folksy Button at the top of this page, or scroll down further to see a selection of items clickable from my Folksy shop.

I am a mostly self taught artist and printmaker from East Sussex. I have always enjoyed the creative arts and over the last few years have honed my skills with a mixture of formal and informal training in fine art painting and relief printmaking.

I most love trying to expand my skills and explore new ways of working with tools and techniques to create my own style of work. Currently my practice is part time around other work - maybe one day I will print and paint full time!

Available work can be seen and purchased online through via button at top of page or direct to a specific print from the Folksy display below.

Of course you can shop in person at my little "Shop in a Shed" at the very sweet Cobblestone Walk in Steyning. I am there on most Saturdays, and on variable weekdays. Please contact me below to check openings, particularly if you are travelling a distance!

Folksy is lovely online platform who aim to be Britain's biggest online craft fair. I am delighted to use Folksy for my online shop and also regularly buy gifts and treats from other artists and makers on the site.

"Delicate World" - my original limited edition linocut print was shortlisted this year for the Royal Academy Summer (Winter) Exhibition. Unfortunately not selected for the final exhibition but so delighted to have made it to the shortlist from 18,000 entries. This hand pulled print is created using oil based ink on 70gsm Japanese Awagami paper.

Little did I know how 2020 would evolve as I carved this block in early January. Seems all the more poignant now, as I am reminded how delicate our world really is.

"High Street Still Life 2" is an original still life painting which was exhibited in the Association of Sussex Artists 2019 Summer Exhibition. It is now in private ownership.

A little video of "Wren" being printed. See this and other prints being made on my Instagram Reels.

I am so delighted when I receive feedback for my prints and paintings. A big thank you to everyone who has posted a review on Folksy or contacted me directly - it means so much.
