"Little Handmade Works of Art"

Hi, I'm Alex, the artist and printmaker behind MegaLilyDesign. Welcome to my little world of Linocut Printmaking.

I work solo from my studio in East Sussex and my tiny shop at Cobblestone Walk in Steyning. Inspired mainly by the natural world and the mystery of us humans that live in it! I produce original Linocut Prints, some hand pulled without a press, some created using my wonderful Gunning etching press. Most of my prints are created with single block and colour, using the carving itself to express the image.

I also create some prints using the reduction method of printmaking. These prints are multilayered but still created from a single block, the block is destroyed in the process so these prints are very small editions and can never be recreated.

Linocut Printing now forms the basis of my practice, however,  I do paint a small number of watercolour and acrylic paintings. I now offer some classes and you can find details further down this page.

Thanks for visiting my website!

Linocut printing is a process that you may be familiar with - lots of people will have tried it at school.

Like any process it evolves over time and with practice can be used to create a wide range of images from the simplistic single colour prints to complex reduction prints, and everything between.

Each print begins with a drawing and sometimes a painting to plan colours, the image is then transferred to the Lino in reverse. At that point carving can begin using a range of U and V shaped tools. To create the print, ink is rolled onto the surface of the Lino block and the paper laid face down on top. The back of the paper is then either hand burnished or run through a press to lift the print.

Below are some of my linocut prints in a Gallery (you can click any print to go direct to it in my Folksy online shop).

To visit my Folksy online shop as a whole click the Folksy Button at the top of this page, or scroll down further to the Folksy section.

I am a mostly self taught artist and printmaker from East Sussex. I have always enjoyed the creative arts and over the last few years have honed my skills with a mixture of formal and informal training in fine art painting and relief printmaking.

I most love trying to hone my skills and explore new ways of working with tools and techniques to create my own style of work. I am now a full time printmaker and artist after 20 years of nursing, I'm looking forward to expanding my printmaking and painting practice even further.

Available work can be seen and purchased online through via button at top of page or direct to a specific print from the Folksy display below.

Until the end of January 2023 you can shop in person at my little "Shop in a Shed" at the very sweet Cobblestone Walk in Steyning. I work from the shop on Tuesday, Friday & Saturday 11-4. Please feel free to contact me below to check openings, particularly if you are travelling a distance!

Folksy is lovely online platform who aim to be Britain's biggest online craft fair. I am delighted to use Folksy for my online shop and also regularly buy gifts and treats from other artists and makers on the site.

Would you like to learn how to create your own linocut prints? Then why not come along to my studio in Hove and have a lesson. In a three hour session you will learn how to choose a design, transfer to lino and carve the block. You will then be able to hand print your design, including the opportunity to print onto Japanese handmade paper.

At the end of the session you will have prints that you can collect after a few drying days or I can send out to you, this is because we will be using oil based printmaking inks that I use in my printmaking practice. I will also mount two prints of your choice ready for you to frame. All materials are included in the price of a session. Classes can be one to one or one to two and available sessions are most Sundays and Mondays  10 - 1 or 2 - 5,  and occassionally  Wednesdays 10 - 1.

Classes are at my home studio in Hove. Please feel free to email me if you have any questions, or if you have an alternative date in mind or even a bespoke class that you would like to arrange for up to four people.

Class for One (3 hours) £75

Class for Two (3 hours) £120 (£60 each)

If you have any further questions before booking then please contact me on the form below or email direct to

I really enjoyed taking part in the Community Artists and Makers Exhibition over the August Bank Holiday weekend at St Nicholas Church in Bramber.

This exhibition featured the work of several local artists and makers and 20% of all sales were donated to the restoration funds for the 3 parish churches.

I have been part of two group shows at Conclave Gallery in Brighton in 2022. A few of my original linocut prints are still available from Conclave, including "Delicate World" and "When The Wind Blows" amongst other limited editions.

You can choose framed or unframed options on the Conclave website - perfect for buying framed pieces online.

So pleased to have raised £90 for Mind UK through The Great Charity Pot and Print Fair in March 2022, and sales of my "Falling" limited edition print.

"Delicate World" - my original limited edition linocut print was shortlisted for the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition. Unfortunately not selected for the final exhibition but so delighted to have made it to the shortlist from 18,000 entries. This hand pulled print is created using oil based ink on 70gsm Japanese Awagami paper.

Little did I know how 2020 would evolve as I carved this block in early January of that year. Seems all the more poignant now, as I am reminded how delicate our world really is.

"Falling" is a limited edition linocut print created in response to a challenging year and represents the start of a personal journey.

Hand burnished onto beautiful Japanese Washi paper.

I am delighted that this print was featured in the AIMPE 2021 print exhibition at Awagami Factory in Japan, and received an honourable mention.

For each print sold, £5 is donated to MIND, the mental health charity.

I'm delighted to be a member of The Prntmakers Council and am looking forward to being part of this community of printmakers.

"High Street Still Life 2" is an original still life painting which was exhibited in the Association of Sussex Artists 2019 Summer Exhibition. It is now in private ownership.

A little video of "Wren" being printed. See this and other prints being made on my Instagram Reels.

I made this demo video for the Folksy Spring Market, so I thought I would put it here in case you are interested to see more of the process.

This is a longer video showing the hand burnishing of my little "Hedgehog" print and the printing of my larger "Agapanthus" print in gold using a press.

I am so delighted when I receive feedback for my prints and paintings. A big thank you to everyone who has posted a review on Folksy or contacted me directly - it means so much.
